Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.
A Historic Mayor
The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
