Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
